Image from The People’s Yoga 2019 wall calendar featuring photographs by Robert Sturman. Click for more info.

To celebrate Yoga Day, we’d like to introduce you to a new member of our family of contributing artists and his gorgeous new wall calendar — The People’s Yoga.

Experience the global connection of yoga in these striking photographs that highlight the serenity of stillness within the hustle, bustle, and grit of modern living. Dedicated yoga practitioner and photographer Robert Sturman captures everyday people and yogis from around the world in dynamic moments of this ancient practice. A woman stretching into Scorpion pose in Manhattan; a group of musicians paused in Standing Backbend in Bulgaria; and a police officer meditating in uniform before a Ganesha mural in Venice Beach, California, are just a few of these portraits of quiet strength and everyday life.

Sturman finds great inspiration for the creative spirit within his own practice that allows him to focus on finding beauty everywhere. Through his images, he strives to encourage all of us — at any time and in any place — to experience the timeless grace and embodied mindfulness of yoga and to enjoy the diverse beauty found in the moment.

His stunning repertoire runs the gamut: yogis perched on rocks jutting out of the Pacific Ocean; African orphans practicing yoga in Kenya; breast cancer survivors, bare-chested and scarred. Sturman has also worked extensively with war veterans who have embraced yoga as a way to help heal PTSD and to try to change the heartbreaking statistics of veteran suicides.

Sturman’s honors include Official Artist of the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, 2010 FIFA World Cup Artist Representing America, and Official Artist of the 2007 United States Olympic team. In 2012 and 2013 he was the subject of two separate New York Times articles celebrating his photographs of yoga practiced around the world.

More About International Day of Yoga

The word yoga derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. International Day of Yoga, or commonly and unofficially referred to as Yoga Day, is celebrated annually on June 21st since its inception in 2015. An international day for yoga was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice originated in Bharat or India. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN address suggested the date of June 21st, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.

The theme for the 2018 celebration, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is “Yoga for Peace.”
