Soul of Travel Series: Traveling the Globe, Connecting the World

Soul of Travel series 2020 wall calendars

October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. UN Day marks the anniversary of the ratification of the 1945 UN Charter when the UN officially came into being. The UN has one central mission: the maintenance of international peace. The UN does this by working to prevent conflict and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish.

In honor of UN Day later this month, we’d like to share our new Soul of Travel series of wall calendars which strives to capture the essence of place, to revere nature and regional cultures, and to cultivate a deep appreciation for adventure. Sharing the diversity of world cultures and sacred traditions as well as the inspiration and beauty of the natural world is our passion. We believe that exploring other cultures with an open mind and open heart can lead to a deeper understanding.

The 2020 Soul of Travel series features the countries of Iceland and Ireland as well as two diverse natural environments of our world — forest and desert. Peering through the lenses of worldclass photographers, viewers will get glimpses of our amazing planet that illuminate a sense of wonder and strengthen our global connection.

Spaceship Earth 2020 wall calendarAnother new wall calendar for 2020 is Spaceship Earth: The Overview Effect. The luminous vision of Earth from space reveals one human family. Boundaries and differences that seem insurmountable at ground level are diminished, illuminating the understanding that all people have the same desires for love, safety, happiness, and acceptance. The “overview effect,” first described in 1987 by science writer Frank White, is the cognitive shift experienced by astronauts while in space. With sudden clarity, they understand that the Earth — home to everyone and everything we have ever known — is a pulsing, swirling, living place that we must protect.

The Spaceship Earth wall calendar features stunning images from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) photographic archives paired with powerful quotes from philosophers, writers, and astronauts.

We hope these new calendars can be inspiration to nurture your heart, renew your soul, and expand your mind.

Dog Days of Summer

The long, hot days of summer are rising before us and bring many opportunities for adventures with our courageous canine companions. But why do some call this period the dog days of summer? Well, as with many things, we have the Greeks to thank. But let’s look at the timing of the days first.

Various computations of the dog days in the northern hemisphere have placed their start anywhere from July 3 to August 15 and lasting for anywhere from 30 to 61 days depending upon latitude.

To understand more about the origins of the name, here’s an excerpt from a wonderful post by Becky Little from National Geographic:

The “dog days,” I always thought, were those summer days so devastatingly hot that even dogs would lie around panting.

Many people today use the phrase to mean something like that—but originally, the phrase actually had nothing to do with dogs, or even with the lazy days of summer. Instead, it turns out, the dog days refer to the dog star, Sirius, and its position in the heavens.

To the Greeks and Romans, the “dog days” occurred around the day when Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. They referred to these days as the hottest time of the year.

So, did the Greeks get it right? Are the dog days, around when Sirius rises, really the hottest days of the year? Continue reading
