Over Half a Million Trees Planted Since 2008 and Growing
We offset our carbon footprint and resource usage by planting trees through Trees for the Future (TREES). TREES is a non-profit agroforestry resource center that helps communities in Central America, Africa, and Asia restore tree cover to their lands. TREES has planted over 127 million trees since 1989. As of December 2016, Amber Lotus Publishing has funded the planting of 650,000 trees. In addition to removing CO2 from the atmosphere, these trees help restore degraded land, reverse deforestation, improve soil quality, and augment local standards of living. Read more about our tree planting philosophy on our blog — Half a Million Trees, Art, Commerce, and Service.
We planted 90,000 trees in 2016 which increased our total number of trees planted to 650,000. The trees planted in 2016 are about 31 times greater than the estimated 2,853 trees used to produce our 2016 product line (including our 2017 calendars). We have committed to planting an additional 50,000 trees in 2017. One of the advantages of planting trees as a carbon footprint off-set strategy is that they remove CO2 from the atmosphere on an ongoing basis. TREES estimates that the 700,000 trees planted and committed to will remove 12,110 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually. This is 22 times greater than the estimated 540 tons of CO2 generated by our 2016 printing activities. These benefits are summarized in the table below:
|TREES PLANTED||TONS OF CO2 REMOVED ANNUALLY|
|Planted (2008–2016)||650,000||Planted (2008–2016)||11,245|
|Minimum Commitment 2017||50,000||Minimum Commitment 2017||865|
|TOTAL PLANTED & COMMITTED||700,000||TOTAL PLANTED & COMMITTED||12,110|
|TREES USED||TONS OF CO2 GENERATED|
|2017 Wall Calendars||2,574||2017 Wall Calendars||487|
|Other Products & Catalogs||279||Other Products & Catalogs||53|

ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES AND PARTNERS
Our 2017 wall calendars, greeting cards, and journals are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Mixed Source Paper, which contains at least 18% recycled content and is processed chlorine free. The FSC label ensures that the wood used to produce the paper comes from well-managed forests, recycled materials, and/or controlled wood from noncontroversial sources. Established in 1993, FSC is an international not-for-profit organization that promotes responsible management of the world’s forests by developing standards and providing independent certification and labeling of forest products.
